Recognized as a community with hometown appeal, Smyrna was recently named one of the Top 50 Best Places to Live for Families by Fortune magazine. Conveniently situated off I-24—just north of Murfreesboro and south of Nashville—this welcoming town has become a popular choice for both families and young professionals.
With the goal to enhance the quality of life for Smyrna residents, the town’s park and recreation department manages over 800 acres of athletic fields, parks, and recreation areas. Residents can trek the 12 miles of trails and greenways, and enjoy greenspaces at Smyrna’s 12 parks outfitted with playgrounds, walking paths, and picnic pavilions.
A few park highlights include, Gregory Mills Park with a splash pad near the shores of Percy Priest Lake. If you enjoy a good game of disc golf, check out Sharp Springs Park, which is also the town’s largest park with 360 acres. Bark Springs dog park is located at Sharp Springs Park along with four catch-and-release ponds for those that enjoy casting a line. The Historic Smyrna Train Depot is the location for the Farmer’s Market held Saturdays, 8 am – noon.

The Smyrna Outdoor Adventure Center (SOAC), also managed by the town, is an indoor and outdoor facility with a climbing wall, hands-on children’s exhibits, summer-season splash pad, educational programs and seasonal events such as movies in the park. There is an entrance fee or annual pass option.
In addition, the town owns and manages the 18-hole Smyrna Golf Course, along with a nine-hole Executive Course, driving range, and putting green.
Stones River is a major waterway that runs through Rutherford County including Smyrna. The West Fork of Stones River flows near Smyrna and the East Fork meets the West Fork outside of Smyrna. Stones River was dammed up in 1968 by the Army Corps of Engineers creating Percy Priest Lake. There are several launch points for small watercraft such as canoes or kayaks on both the West and East Forks of Stones River.
One way to get involved in a new community is by joining a sports league as a player or coach. The Smyrna airport is a general aviation and military use airport. Many local company headquarters use the airport for company and private aircraft travel. The airport was once the site of Sewart Military Base, established during WWI.
The Great Tennessee Air Show takes place in Smyrna every other year, featuring the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and a variety of specialty aerial performers. The most recent air show was held in June 2025.
