Mt. Pleasant was once known as the phosphate capital of the world when brown phosphate rock was discovered in 1895, leading to a mining boom. Founded in 1824, Mt. Pleasant is located in Maury County, south of Columbia. Today, downtown has several shops and restaurants along with the Mt.Pleasant History Museum. Here you can learn about local history from the Civil War to the phosphate industry.
Historic downtown Mt. Pleasant has undergone extensive revitalization, including new lighting, expanded sidewalks, improved landscaping, public art installations, and other beautification projects that enhance the charm of downtown and a vibrant destination for shopping, dining, and entertainment.
Mt. Pleasant has six parks with walking trails, picnic areas, and playgrounds. At Gardenia Clark Park there is a disc golf course and Gaga Ball pit. Rotary Park has a playground, picnic pavilion, and basketball courts, and Veterans Park has a walking trail and splash pad. The parks and recreation department hosts events and family fun nights throughout the year.
In addition, the town hosts “Music on the Porch” most Saturday evenings during spring, summer, and fall months, at 510 N. Main Street, or locally known as Walnut Grove—a historic home near downtown. Bring your lawn chair or blanket and enjoy the music
