Founded September 11, 1911, Middle Tennessee State University is proud of its more than 100-year commitment to academic excellence and student success. A large regional university with a national reputation, MTSU is a top choice for transfer students, veterans, and adult learners in Tennessee.
MTSU is located on more than 500 acres in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, just 35 miles from downtown Nashville, and offers more than 300 programs of study (www.mtsu.edu/programs) at the bachelor’s, master’s, specialist, and doctoral levels, as well as hundreds of student organizations and clubs.
With more than $1.5 billion invested in new and remodeled infrastructure in the last two decades, MTSU students benefit from well-equipped facilities and resources that can't be matched.
From a 500-acre agriculture lab minutes from campus to new state-of-the-art record studios to an innovative new School of Concrete and Construction Management building, MTSU has it all.
The university also offers guaranteed academic scholarships for first-time freshmen and incoming transfer students (www.mtsu.edu/scholarships).
Devoted to Student Success

With around 20,000 students, MTSU prides itself on its small-town feel.
“It sounds really cliché, but MTSU really is a large school that provides a small school atmosphere,” explained Dr. Tyler Henson, the University Registrar. “We pride ourselves in providing as much personal attention to students as possible, so they don’t feel like a number or get lost in the crowd.”

In its continued dedication to student success, the university has developed a range of integrated initiatives that ensure every student who comes to MTSU with the drive to succeed will be met with the best instruction from professors and services from dedicated administrators who care about their success.

For example, the MT One Stop is a one-stop shop where students can get help with enrollment, registration, financial aid, tutoring, billing, transcripts, and more. Students and potential students can schedule an in-person appointment or meet with an enrollment coordinator virtually.
MTSU also offers free tutoring, a student food pantry, counseling services, and more.
“Students have enough to worry about on a daily basis, so anywhere we can cut down on their time and stress, we like to do so,” Henson said. “That’s why free tutoring and counseling are important resources to have on campus. The food pantry is another example of a service we offer to help cut down on stress for students . . . to remove one more worry for them.”
Academic Excellence and Affordability
For a sixth consecutive year, MTSU has been named one of the top universities in the United States by The Princeton Review. It’s one of only five institutions in the state to make the list.
“’Being named one of America’s Best Colleges for 2025 means MTSU is a leading college in the nation, known for its exceptional learning environment, outstanding student outcomes, and commitment to diversity,” MTSU President Sidney A. McPhee said of the honor.
When surveyed by The Princeton Review, students noted things like:
-
MTSU takes the time to “foster an environment of care for each and every student.”
-
The campus is big but “feels like a comfortable and home-like school” where people “sit on the quad by the library and talk with friends, play music and skateboard.”
-
“At a school as large as MTSU, you see all types (of students) from different ends of the spectrum,” and everyone “is very open to whoever comes into the school.”
-
Another student noted the university’s friendliness. “No matter who they are,” people at MTSU are “extremely friendly and inclusive.”
MTSU also is on Forbes’ 2024–25 list of America’s Top Colleges and The Wall Street Journal’s list of America’s Best Colleges 2025.
As one of the most affordable universities across Tennessee, MTSU’s tuition is just under $10,400 per year for full-time, in-state students. About 70% of MTSU’s students receive financial aid, and 56% of our students graduate debt-free. One in 6 college graduates in the greater Nashville area earned their degrees at MTSU, making the university the top provider to the region’s workforce, with more than 70,000 alumni in the region. Since its founding, MTSU has graduated more than 165,000 people into its alumni family.
“MTSU offers a fantastic opportunity for people in Middle Tennessee to get a world-class education in their own backyard. Keeping tuition affordable is key to that opportunity and important to the local economy because so many of our students end up staying right here in the area once they graduate. We have students who come from all over the world to take part in our signature programs, but serving the Middle Tennessee area is a core component of the university. It’s important to make sure getting an education at MTSU is accessible to those who live here,” Henson said.
