Building Homes, Building Hope: Habitat for Humanity Williamson-Maury and the Power of the ReStore

For more than three decades, Habitat for Humanity Williamson-Maury (HFHWM) has been putting faith into action by bringing people together to build homes, communities, and hope. What began with a simple mission—to partner with families in need of affordable housing—has grown into a multifaceted effort to ensure that everyone in Williamson and Maury counties has a safe, decent, and affordable place to call home.

While Habitat is most often associated with new home construction, the organization’s impact extends far beyond the build site. From critical home repairs for existing homeowners to its bustling ReStore in Franklin, HFHWM is finding innovative ways to strengthen neighborhoods, support families, and sustain its mission for years to come.

Affordable Homeownership in a Growing Community

In Williamson and Maury counties, the cost of land and construction has risen dramatically, making it nearly impossible for many working families to achieve the dream of homeownership. HFHWM partners with these families, who are often priced out of the traditional housing market, to provide a pathway to stability.

Through a “hand up, not a handout” approach, future homeowners invest hundreds of hours of sweat equity on build sites, attend financial literacy classes, and commit to purchasing their homes with an affordable mortgage. This proven model helps families build long-term security while fostering pride of ownership.

Expanding Impact Through Critical Home Repairs

Recognizing the growing need to support current homeowners, HFHWM developed a Critical Repair Program that addresses essential home repairs for income-restricted residents. From fixing leaking roofs and unsafe flooring to repairing heating systems and accessibility modifications, these repairs allow families to remain in their homes safely and comfortably.

In many cases, a single repair prevents displacement, reduces financial strain, and provides aging or disabled residents with the dignity of remaining in the communities they love. The program ensures Habitat can continue serving local families even as the cost of new home construction rises.

The ReStore: Where Every Purchase Builds Home

One of HFHWM’s most visible and impactful programs is the Habitat ReStore, located in Franklin. More than just a home improvement store, the ReStore is a community hub where gently used furniture, appliances, building materials, home décor, and more are donated by individuals and local businesses, then resold at a fraction of retail prices.

The ReStore plays three vital roles in Habitat’s mission:

  1. Funding Habitat’s Work – Every purchase directly supports Habitat’s housing and repair programs. Shoppers know their dollars are making a tangible difference in the lives of their neighbors.
  2. Reducing Waste – Each year, the ReStore diverts thousands of pounds of usable materials from landfills. By giving items a second life, the store promotes sustainability while helping families find affordable solutions for their own homes.
  3. Serving the Community – Whether it’s a college student furnishing an apartment, a DIYer tackling a renovation, or a family on a budget shopping for a kitchen table, the ReStore offers something for everyone at accessible prices.

Donating to the ReStore is easy and rewarding. Items can be dropped off at the Franklin location during business hours, or larger donations can be picked up free of charge. Every couch, stove, or box of tiles donated becomes part of a much larger story—one that builds hope and homes across Williamson and Maury counties.

Building Together

At its heart, Habitat for Humanity Williamson-Maury is about partnership. Volunteers, donors, businesses, faith groups, and civic organizations all play a role in building homes and repairing lives. The ReStore, in particular, provides a way for everyone to contribute—whether through shopping, donating, or volunteering.

The ripple effect is profound. Families gain stability and security. Children grow up with a safe place to call home. Neighborhoods become stronger. And our entire community benefits from the investment in affordable housing.

How to Get Involved

There are countless ways to join Habitat for Humanity Williamson-Maury in building a brighter future:

  • Shop or Donate at the ReStore – Find bargains, clear space in your home, or volunteer your time to keep the store running smoothly.
  • Volunteer on the Build Site – No experience is necessary; Habitat provides the tools and training.
  • Support Financially – Every gift, no matter the size, fuels the mission of affordable housing and critical repairs.
  • Spread the Word – Share Habitat’s story with friends, neighbors, and coworkers.

Together, we can ensure that families in Williamson and Maury counties have not only a roof over their heads but also a solid foundation for the future.
